Introduction
One of the first questions every student at Ditya Overseas asks us is: “Should I do IELTS vs PTE in 2026?”
It sounds simple. But the answer depends on where you want to study, how quickly you need to take the test, what type of exam format suits your strengths, and which score each country’s visa authority accepts.
In 2026, both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are widely accepted — but they are not interchangeable in every situation. Choose the wrong test and you could face visa delays, test retakes, or even missed intake deadlines.
This guide, written by the expert coaching team at Ditya Overseas in Ahmedabad, explains the real differences between IELTS and PTE in 2026 so you can make a confident, informed decision.
What Is IELTS Academic?
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is co-owned by the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge Assessment English. It is the world’s most widely recognised English proficiency test for higher education and visa purposes.
- Format: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking (Speaking is face-to-face with a human examiner)
- Scoring: Band scale of 0–9 (e.g., 6.5, 7.0)
- Duration: 2 hours 45 minutes (plus Speaking — usually on a separate day)
- Results: Available in 3–5 days
- Test frequency: Available multiple times per week at test centres across India
- Test fee in India (2026): Approximately ₹17,000
What Is PTE Academic?
PTE (Pearson Test of English) Academic is a computer-based English test designed and administered by Pearson. It is fully AI-scored with no human examiner involvement.
- Format: Speaking & Writing, Reading, Listening (all in one session)
- Scoring: Points scale of 10–90
- Duration: Approximately 2 hours (all in one sitting)
- Results: Usually within 48 hours (often same day)
- Test frequency: Available almost daily at Pearson Professional Centres
- Test fee in India (2026): Approximately ₹15,900

Country-by-Country: IELTS or PTE for Your Visa?
Canada
Choose IELTS if you are applying through the SDS (Student Direct Stream).
The SDS fast-track visa route — which reduces processing time from 12 weeks to 20 working days — only accepts IELTS Academic with a minimum overall band of 6.0 and no band below 6.0.
If you are applying through the regular study permit stream, most Canadian universities accept both IELTS and PTE Academic. However, given the SDS advantage, IELTS is the stronger strategic choice for Canada.
United Kingdom
Both IELTS and PTE are accepted for the UK Student Visa (Tier 4).
However, IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) is a specific approved version — not the standard IELTS Academic. Make sure you book the correct test: IELTS Academic for UKVI or PTE Academic for UKVI.
Both are recognised by the UK Home Office. Choose based on which exam format you are more comfortable with.
Australia
Both IELTS and PTE are accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for Student Visa (Subclass 500).
Australia is one of the strongest markets for PTE Academic — Pearson has significant presence in the Australian education system. Many students find PTE scoring more predictable for Australian university requirements (minimum PTE score usually 58–65).
If you feel more confident with human Speaking interaction, choose IELTS. If you prefer a fully computer-based format with fast results, choose PTE.
New Zealand
Both IELTS and PTE are accepted for New Zealand Student Visa.
New Zealand Immigration (INZ) accepts IELTS, PTE, and TOEFL for student visa applications. Minimum scores are typically IELTS 5.5–6.5 or PTE 42–58 depending on the institution.
USA
USA universities primarily rely on TOEFL iBT. However, most US universities now accept IELTS and PTE as well. If the USA is your primary target, TOEFL iBT gives you the widest acceptance. If you are applying to multiple countries including the USA, IELTS is the safest single test to cover all of them.
Which Test Is Easier: IELTS or PTE?
There is no universally “easier” test. It depends on your personal strengths:
Choose IELTS if you:
- Are more comfortable speaking conversationally with a real person
- Prefer a structured paper-based or hybrid format
- Want the flexibility of One Skill Retake (retake just one section)
- Are applying specifically to Canada via SDS stream
- Prefer handwritten essays
Choose PTE if you:
- Type faster than you write and prefer a computer-based environment
- Want results in 24–48 hours (good for tight deadlines)
- Are more comfortable speaking to a microphone than a person
- Prefer consistent, AI-based scoring with no examiner subjectivity
- Have failed IELTS Speaking and want to try a different format
IELTS and PTE Score Conversion Table
| IELTS Band | PTE Score Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 5.0 | 36–42 |
| 5.5 | 43–49 |
| 6.0 | 50–57 |
| 6.5 | 58–64 |
| 7.0 | 65–72 |
| 7.5 | 73–79 |
| 8.0 | 80–88 |
Note: These are approximate equivalents. Each institution and visa authority sets its own minimum score requirements — always check the specific requirement for your target university and country.

Frequently Asked Questions: IELTS vs PTE 2026
Q1. Is IELTS or PTE easier for Indian students?
Neither is definitively easier — it depends on your strengths. Students who are confident speakers tend to do better in IELTS because the Speaking section involves a real conversation. Students who type well and prefer AI consistency tend to score better in PTE.
Q2. Which test is accepted by more universities?
IELTS Academic is accepted by over 11,000 organisations worldwide. PTE Academic is accepted by over 3,000 universities and institutions. For maximum acceptance, IELTS has a broader reach — but both are accepted by all major UK, Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand universities.
Q3. Can I use PTE for a Canada student visa?
PTE is accepted by most Canadian universities for admission. However, for the SDS (fast-track) study permit stream, IELTS Academic is required. If you want the fastest Canada visa processing, you must give IELTS.
Q4. How many times can I retake IELTS or PTE?
Both tests can be retaken as many times as you like (within the registration windows). IELTS now offers a One Skill Retake option — you can retake just one of the four sections within 60 days of your original test. PTE requires a full retake each time.
Q5. Is PTE accepted for UK visa?
Yes, PTE Academic for UKVI is accepted by the UK Home Office for Tier 4 Student Visa applications. Make sure you book PTE Academic for UKVI specifically, not just the standard PTE Academic.
Q6. How long are IELTS and PTE scores valid?
Both IELTS and PTE scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. Most universities require scores to be valid at the time of enrolment, so plan your test timing accordingly.
Q7. Which test should I take if I want to apply to both Canada and Australia?
IELTS Academic covers both — it is accepted for Australian Student Visa and for Canada SDS. If you take IELTS with a strong score (6.5+), you can use the same scorecard for applications to both countries.
